Jim Moodie
Startup advisor & Angel Investor
Intro
My personal mission is to create and nurture startups that make a lasting social impact.
I love to help solve the challenges faced by startups.
Let's make a difference together.
Work
I’ve spent the last 20 years working with software startups, initially in product and delivery roles, and then focusing on the operational and strategic challenges of building companies.
In 2006 I co-founded the software company, BPM Logic. We built software and platforms for many of the original wave of “Silicon Roundabout” startups.
In 2017 I joined Prolific as one of the first employees. In my time as COO we scaled from 5-150 people, x100 revenue, raised $32M, and expanded into the US.
I went through many phases of scaling over 7 years, getting involved with managing almost every area of the business at some point, and solving many interesting problems, learning about new things, and having some crazy growth experiences.
Angel investing
I’ve started to do some angel investing, mainly through Ventures Together. If you are building something interesting, and thinking about raising money, tell me about it.
I am particularly interested in Fintech, Marketplaces, Crowd-working, AI infrastructure & Data startups.
Startup Advisory
I’m always up for discussing strategic challenges of any kind, but I think I can best help startups in Seed - Series B stage of scaling:
-Talent, hiring, people, culture and organisational structure
-Business model analysis, and Growth strategy
-Product and Strategic roadmaps, and Strategy workshops
-Leadership team effectiveness
-Coaching CEOs, Founders and Execs
-Operational strategy
-Crisis management. When disaster strikes and there doesn’t seem to be a way out, I believe there’s always a way forward - “The obstacle is the way”
Interests
The Philosoper COO
I have a personal project to apply philosophy to startups. Many Tech leaders studied philosophy, and the power of clear critical thinking informs my approach. I am working on a series of essays to apply various thinkers wisdom to startups.
The Oxford startup ecosystem
I used to run the popular “Oxford Startups meetup” growing to over 1000 members, and running some legendary demo nights that were the first chance to see many Oxford tech success stories. I love Oxford but it also frustrates me, I think it could achieve so much more.
Oxford is a microcosm of the challenges for UK startups. We should be translating our world class research sector into a lot more economic value.
